Got Medieval: Text on the Margins (Mmm… Marginalia)
The result is a fairly clever little joke. In order to read the text “Magnificat anima mea Dominum” or “God magnifies my soul,” you need a magnifying glass! There is also probably a little bit of recursion joke going on as well. The marginal figure holds a text in his hands that presumably has little hidden marginal figures, which may themselves hold further texts, and on and on.
