» Sound less loud
This short link has made me think about urban noise. There’s a lot of it, and generally it’s awful. It also made me think back to my trip to Japan, where, as I recall it (probably erroneously) there was a lot less noise, and ‘undesigned’ incidental noises, such as alarms, announcements, etc were less intrusive (the birdsong compared to the beep of equal volume).
It’s also made me think about regularly commuting. The announcements on the train I travel on comprise:
- A welcome announcement
- A welcome announcement in four languages
- A security announcement
- A station announcement
This is done first automatically, then by the conductor, it must amount to four minutes of loudspeaker modulated speech, a lot of it uneccessary.
