“As a result of strict control of materials during wartime, pencils were made and sold unpainted. As this example shows, they were stamped ‘WAR DRAWING’.
“The exception to this was a special range of green pencils displayed here. Each contained a pencil and a map of Germany. The pencils were issued to bomber command aircrew and were also sent to POW camps. They were a vital part of the wartime escape networks.”
